Introduction to Preaching [Homiletics]

This course is designed to introduce students to the theoretical and practical aspects of preaching.  Students will learn the basics of sermon preparation, construction and delivery. Students will deliver sermons in class based on assigned biblical texts.  This will include review of individual sermon presentations. There will be discussion on assigned readings. Students will be notified of pre-course reading assignments.

Dr. Kathi Chavous

A preacher, conference speaker, teacher and seminar leader, the Reverend Dr. Kathi R. Chavous has delivered the gospel message across the country. Her desire is to facilitate the growth and development of God’s people through dynamic preaching and teaching, perceptive and caring attention to the needs of every life she touches.
Dr. Chavous has 20+ years of extensive and diverse experience in ministry. She previously served as Assistant Pastor and Interim Pastor, Bereavement Coordinator for Trinity Hospice Care of Georgia, Chair of the Interdenominational Theological Center’s Faith Journey Mentoring Program and the Lily Foundation’s Institute for Clergy Excellence.
A former native of Buffalo New York. Dr. Chavous was awarded the Bachelor of Science degree in Organizational Management from Houghton College, West Seneca, New York; the Master of Divinity degree in Homiletics and Leadership Development, and the Doctor of Divinity degree focused on Strategic Leadership Training/Mentoring for Women, both awarded by the Morehouse School of Religion at the Interdenominational Theological Center. She also earned a Certificate in Faith-Based Counseling Training through the Georgia Association for Pastoral Care. In addition, Dr. Chavous has served as Adjunct Instructor with Dr. Marvin Morgan in the ITC’s Certificate in Theology program and Dr. Jacqueline Grant, noted professor and author of White Woman’s Christ and Black Woman’s Jesus: Feminist Christology and Womanist Response.
The recipient of many honors and awards, among them the Martin Luther King Sr. Pastoral Ministry Award; the Sandy F. Ray Memorial Preaching Award, the Delta Sigma Theta Pinnacle Leadership Award and Women of the Cloth – Torch Award.
