Introduction to Pastoral Care

Introduction to Pastoral Care is designed to equipping persons for basic pastoral care in a church and/or community context. Pastoral Care practices will include as crisis intervention, short-term counseling, grief support, and other experiences ministers may encounter. Students will integrate Biblical, theological, and psychoeducational understandings of the human condition as foundational for care and counseling practices. The course will also include self-reflection to help define one’s pastoral identity.

Rev. Dr. Jaye Lynn Peabody Smith, DMIN, MPA, MDIV, MS, LPC, CPCS,
Rev. Dr. Jaye Lynn Peabody Smith is a therapist, speaker, professor, and author. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor who in 2014, started Peabody Practice, LLC. The Peabody Practice provides counseling, consultation, and training to individuals and organizations. She recently joined the faculty of BSK Theological Seminary as Assistant Professor of Pastoral Care and Counseling.
Rev. Jaye earned a Master of Divinity in Pastoral Counseling and a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health and recently a Doctor of Ministry in Pastoral Counseling from Mercer University. She also earned a Master of Public Administration with a concentration in Non-Profit Administration from New York University.
Rev. Jaye has served in ministry for over 20 years. She accepted her call to preach at New Bethel AME Church in Lithonia, Georgia. She was licensed to preach in 2001 and ordained in 2004. Rev. Jaye has served as a Youth Pastor and Executive Pastor in various churches. She is currently the Executive Pastor at Redemptive Life Christian Fellowship in Conyers, Georgia where her father in ministry, Dr. Mark Thompson, is the Senior Pastor.
Rev. Jaye provides individual, couple, and group counseling. She has presented workshops and led corporate training on a diverse segment of topics. She has presented at both state and national conferences including the Licensed Professional Counseling Association of Georgia and the American Mental Health Counselors Association.
Rev. Jaye has been a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. since April of 1993. She was initiated into the Pi Phi Chapter in the Eastern Region at Ramapo College in New Jersey. She is a Diamond Life member. Since 1999, she has been a member of the Stone Mountain-Lithonia Alumnae Chapter. From 2016 – 2020, she humbly and proudly served as the Southern Regional Chaplain. Currently, she is a member of the National Leadership Academy Committee with Leadership Delta.
Rev. Jaye has participated in assorted documentaries. The most recent, Daughters of Eve, by Zanah Thirus won the “Outstanding Achievement Award” in the Religious Film category at the 2021 Black Swan International Festival.
Rev. Jaye has dedicated her life and career to social justice and mental health access. She is passionate about abiding with people on their journey to emotional wholeness.

Jaye is married to Tommie Smith. Together, they have a blended family of 7 amazing children.
